The Play’s the Thing

I don’t really want to come on here after being absent for over a week and complain about how busy I am.

But OMG YOU GUYZ I AM SO BUSY!

Most of it has to do with the fact that this is Contest Play season, and that means late-night rehearsals and doing all of the other things most people don’t think about directors doing: designing the set, building the set, paiting the set (this is the bane of my existance; I hate sets), as well as traveling to competitions on the weekends – this is a contest after all – and finidng props and planning for all of this to happen. So it’s a lot. On top of all that, I have to deal with cast issues that arise, and it is this latter part that has me running on no sleep and not writing a single blog post or article. We had a few changes in our cast (read: a few students could not compete for whatever reason), and I had to do a whole new show to accomodate the loss of our cast members.

So I ordered a bunch of new plays for three people instead of four, and figured they’d come in right away and I’d choose a play and hvae it by the next rehearsal all cut (the show can only be 40 minutes long, so I have to cut the show myself from a longer piece) and ready to go.

So I waited. And waited. And waited.

Waiting is really the most depressing thing because your hands are tied and you want to move forward, but you can’t. As our deadline for the show inched closer and closer (we have to perform this thing four weeks from now), and the plays kept not showing up, I was totally freaked out and stressed out and upset.

Luckily, the plays arrived in my mailbox on Monday (AFTER rehearsal, of course), and I was able to read the shows quickly and select one. It’s not the best, but it’ll do. Luckier still, it’s a short play already so it won’t require much cutting. And best of all: There is no set. Just furniture. YES.

So that’s what I’ve been up to. Now, in the next four weeks, it’s going to be a whirlwind to get this thing put together into something we can all be proud of. Plus, you know, I’m teaching full time and still doing some freelance copywriting and some writing for GAB. Oh yea, and I like to see my family every once in a while. Friends, sorry, but you’ll probably have to wait.

Anywho, wish me luck! I’ll pop in here from time to time if I have anything interesting to say, but it’s a safe bet you won’t hear much from me, at least not consistently, until March. But I’ll try! Don’t forget about me, please!
